The home environment is rapidly changing with the consumer experience shaped by the replacement of CRT screens with large LCD/plasma screens that deliver the highest quality viewing experience through support of high definition and blue ray DVD. The migration from standard definition to high definition is gathering pace throughout the world largely driven by developments in MPEG-4 AVC compression solutions. MPEG-4 AVC is now widely adopted in the DTH markets delivering compression efficiencies in excess of 50% when compared to MPEG-2 HD. For Contribution & Distribution applications first generation MPEG-4 HD 4:2:2 AVC solutions have been appearing in the market delivering higher quality video at lower bit rates than MPEG-2 could offer. However second generation MPEG-4 HD 4:2:2 solutions are now coming to the market now that offer the same bandwidth efficiencies as the first generation but are also designed to support new advanced features such as 10 bit precision and 1080p50/60 formats that deliver far greater quality than was ever possible with MPEG-2. Further out, emerging applications such as 3DTV are moving from a demonstration phase into real projects with a number of channel launches planned throughout the next 18 months.

Every 25 years, three times in the past, 3D has proven dramatically popular, and then faded away after several years, as the novelty wares off.  The world is asking whether the same thing will happen with the current set of 3D movies.   As in the past, the first 3D movies have drawn huge audiences.   There are plans in Europe and the United States to start 3D TV broadcasting soon, and the standards activities of bodies like the ISO, ITU, DVB, and SMPTE are in full throttle.    David Wood Chairs 3D TV activities in the ITU and DVB project and will explain the status of the standards there, and give a personal appraisal of whether 3D TV can be succesful this time.   The World Cup this summer will be the first world sporting event shot in 3D TV.  David Wood will tell you what to expect technically, but not who will win the World Cup.
