Over the next few years, Latin America, and in particular Brazil, is expected to show a tremendous appetite for HD programming. How will this demand be met and, more importantly, how will it be delivered? Jurandir Pitsch from SES will offer his thoughts on the question, as well as provide his outlook on the challenges facing the HD community, the factors driving the demand for HD, and a glimpse into when HD will become a mainstream offering in the region.

07:40 - Television Camera Sensors for the Advanced HDTV Era

The argument being made here is that creative content producers deserve tools appropriate to their task, not somebody else's task, and that the tools and technologies that are needed to support the mission of the content creator - i.e. maintaining production values - are not necessarily the same as those employed in consumer technology to confront its different issues of size, weight, and most of all, cost.
In the example of optical format size, it has become increasingly clear that the "sweet spot" for broadcasters in this era of HDTV (and soon advanced HDTV) is the 2/3 inch optical format size. Although for advanced HDTV we might for technical reasons prefer going back to the larger formats of the past - one inch or even 1 1/4 inch -, production crews appreciate the compact size of the 2/3 inch format. 2/3 inch therefore really does represent an optimum mid-point between the unwieldy bulk of the large formats and the optically-limited resolution of the small formats.
At the same time, today's latest 2/3 inch format television cameras are very different from those of the past. New development in CMOS technology show promising performance improvements and new capabilities. The paper will review state of the art in current developments.
In conclusion, with the design objectives of broadcast cameras properly matched to the application, challenges such as advanced 1080p/60 HDTV can be met in terms of electrical performance specification, yet without any constraint in creative freedom. This may not be the case with equipment optimized for a less critical application.

Technology evolution is a continuous annoyance for those trying to decide on which technology to use. Whenever you have almost finalized your plans, a new generation of system comes along which seems to offer advantages. Do you start planning again, or go with what you have? This applies to all media systems which use digital technology or software layers - which is just about all of them - and it applies all over the world.
The list of 'options' is long and getting longer. Should we go for SDTV, HDTV, (maybe) 3D TV, SHV, Hybrid Broadcast Broadband? Should we use first or second generation versions of the delivery systems. What about interactive systems? Is there a right policy?
The short presentation will outline how organizations in Europe are reacting to the situation - who is doing what and why? This may be interesting for South America.

The presentation will give an overview about the possibilities introduced by a powerful Java middleware platform. It will also describe some of the use cases for Brazil, the overall middleware architecture
and the deployment roadmap.

Control of Loudness Across Broadcast Platforms

With the transition to digital broadcast, un acceptable inter-program level jumps have become more frequent, for instance between programming and commercials or promos.
The paper summarizes recent international research in the field, and demonstrates how open standards may be used to improve the situation not just in DTV, but across all broadcast platforms, and at a minimum of station workload and expenditure. Procedures that focus solely on HDTV, dialogue or peak level are simply not adequate to encompass today’s requirements.
It is reported how broadcasters around the world may adopt open standard audio descriptors in delivery specifications, ingest, and transmission. The new techniques produce predictable results at a high audio quality with a minimum of station processing. They work well with linear audio as well as with data reduction codecs, and produce compliant metadata for use with AC3, AAC, MP3 and other codecs.
